The Balkan side qualified emphatically for Euro
2004, sealing their place in Portugal with a game
to spare.
A watertight defence saw Bulgaria concede just
four goals in eight games, while at the other end
a prolific attack led by Leverkusen target man Dimitar
Berbatov, ensured Plamen Markov's men made easy
work of a lightweight group.
Rocked and certainly weakened by the retirement
of inspirational playmaker and captain Krassimir
Balakov - a survivor from the 1994 World Cup semi-final
side - Markov has put his faith in Celtic schemer
Stilian Petrov to lead the team.
Though impressive in qualifying, the relative weakness
of Bulgaria's group has given an exaggerated picture
of their actual strength. But a recent 1-0 friendly
victory over World Cup semi-finalists South Korea
has boosted their credibility and they could pose
a threat to the two Scandanavian sides vying for
qualification behind Italy.
Prediction: Lacking a world-class match-winner
to make it through
