Euro 2000 apart, Croatia have qualified for every
major tournament since 1996, and are well used to
playing for high stakes.
The squad used to rely on strong individual like
Prosinecki, Boksic and Suker. Since these superstars
have retired, the team is less spectacular, but
more united. Otto Baric's rigid 4-4-2 and tremendous
organization means that his side are able to come
through uder pressure.
The defence is based around young goalkeeping star
Stipe Pletikosa, who did not concede a goal during
the home qualifiers. His natural ability complements
to Igor Tudor and Robert Kovac's experience.
Selection dilemmas abound in midfield, where Baric
has to choose between many talents, with Milan Rapaic,
Giovani Rosso and Niko Kovac favourites to start.
Up front the main strength is Monaco's efficient
hitman, Dado Prso.
Prediction: Tough to beat, but lacking the
talent of former squads.
