One of the most impressive teams in qualifying,
going unbeaten - seven wins, one draw - and easing
past the Dutch 3-1 in Prague to seal their place
in Portugal, which will give them a huge psychological
advantage when they face Dick Advocaat's men in
Aveiro on June 19.
Coach Karel Brückner's introduction of the
fledgling players he led to second place in the
under-21 European Championship in 2000 has worked
a treat, blending to spectacular effect with the
experienced heads of Karel Poborsky, Jan Koller
and Pavel Nedved.
With great attacking potential - Poborsky, Nedved,
Koller, added to Tomas Rosicky, Milan Baros and
Vladimir Smicer - the Czech Republic certainly have
goals in the side, though their forward momentum
depends heavily - perhaps too heavily - on inspirational
Ballon d'Or winner and captain Nedved.
But there are suspicions they may not be as solid
at the back - despite the assured performances of
Rennes' young keeper Petr Cech - which may see them
found out when they come up against quality sides.
Prediction: If they can fill the holes at
the back, potential European champions
