Are England genuine contenders? The bookmakers
seem to think so, but as so often they seem to be
a couple of players away from the very best squads.
England's play improves with their opponent - chaotic
against Macedonia and Slovakia, confident and assured
against Turkey. Don't be surprised if they punch
above their weight to shock France but drop points
to Switzerland.
There may be dissatisfaction with Sven-Goran Eriksson's
direct game, but he is merely playing to his side's
strengths; physical ability, David Beckham's set
pieces and the pace of Michael Owen. Steven Gerrard
is a crucial midfield figure, while Wayne Rooney
can be a thrilling wild-card who could just provide
a match-winning spark
Prediction: The usual near miss, edged out
in the latter stages.
