Made heavy weather of a fairly simple qualifying
group and then lost 3-0 at home to France. Will
be without key defender Christoph Metzelder, and
creative hub Sebastian Deisler is being treated
for depression. The temptation to write the Germans
off is almost unbearable, isn't it?
It's not the first time Germany have looked like
a team in crisis but as we know they, unlike the
Dutch, are rather adept at putting things right
in the nick of time. This is the team of no-hopers
that made it to the World Cup final against all
the odds.
Alongside old stagers such as Oliver Kahn and
Michael Ballack a new generation is emerging, mainly
from Stuttgart, including skilful striker Kevin
Kuranyi and energetic wing back Andreas Hinkel.
In truth, it's hard to talk up this Germany side
on paper. There are too many gaps, too much reliance
on Kahn and Ballack, not enough variety to win.
But the Germans are not burdened with any illusions
that the best side has to win a tournament. They
just have to be German
Prediction: Won't be beautiful, will be
dangerous.
