| 2004 represents
the best and surely final chance for the so-called
'golden generation' to fulfil its potential. The likes
of Luis Figo, Rui Costa and Fernando Couto have never
really shone on the international stage, coming closest
to glory in Euro 2000 where they took eventual champions
France to extra time in the semi-finals.
Add to veteran stars the youthful vigour of teenage
sensations Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma
and Portugal have an extremely potent mix. Supremely
talented Porto playmaker and ex-Brazilian Deco adds
yet more flair creativity to a midfield packed with
skills. Pauleta offers real ability up front.
Automatic qualifiers as hosts, it is hard to judge
Portugal's progress with any degree of accuracy,
and their form in home friendlies has been lacklustre.
A 3-0 thumping by Spain in particular showed that
the squad has considerable room for improvement.
Yet with the right coach guiding the team, home
advantage and a squad of exceptional ability, it
is hard to discount the Portuguese. Always unpredictable,
this time they just might justify their status as
one of the favourites.
