A major concern for coach Georgi Yartsev will be
his side's lack of form away from home, suffering
qualifying qualifying defeats in Georgia and Albania.
Conditions do not get much more un-Russian than
Portugal in the summer, and the warmth could be
the undoing of this otherwise under-rated team.
However, the increasingly assured Champions League
performances of Lokomotiv Moscow have coincided
with the national team's Group 10 comeback to suggest
an all-round resurgence of Russian football.
Unsurprisingly, Lokomotiv are well-represented
in Yartsev's team, supplying such leading lights
as goalkeeper Sergei Ovchinnikov, full back Vadim
Evseev and midfield schemer Dmitri Loskov.
The country's call for a top class striker may
have been answered by Dinamo Moscow hitman Dmitri
Bulykin, who scored a classy hat trick against Switzerland.
The imposing and clinical Bulykin could be the final
piece in an impressive Russian jigsaw
