Spain never do anything the easy way. Cruising
in qualifying, they lost at home to Greece, and
then struggled to a goalless draw in Northern Ireland,
condemning them to a playoff, where they eventually
overcame Norway with something to spare.
At the back, the Spanish look uncommonly accomplished.
Saez has two excellent goalkeepers at his disposal
in Casillas and Cañizares, with Puyol, Helguera
and Marchena all excellent options in a four-man
back line.
The Spanish squad is packed full of star names,
and a major headache for coach Iñaki Saez
is how to fit brilliant attack-minded players as
good as Raul, Valeron, Joaquin, Reyes and Fernando
Torres into the same side.
There is no more talented squad in Europe and the
warm Portguese weather should suit them, but serious
doubts remain over whether Spain can attain the
consistency necessary to lift a major trophy.
