The Swiss provided the shock of Group 10, ousting
the highly-rated Russians and Irish to qualify automatically
for Portugal.
Using a core of players from Christian Gross' successful
Basel side including Bernd Haas and the Yakin brothers,
Murat and Hakin, coach Köbi Kuhn has moulded
an enviably coherent and spirited group. That spirit
was seen when a shell-shocked Ireland were dismissed
2-0 in the final round of qualifiers.
With ancient talismans Ciriaco Sforza and Stephane
Chapuisat being controversially phased out, something
that did not initially please Swiss fans, the new
generation has handsomely repaid Kuhn's faith, despite
its relative lack of star quality.
Much will depend on an occasionally suspect defence
and the form of mercurial playmaker Hakan Yakin,
but with a full-strength squad the Swiss are more
than capable of causing a few more surprises.
Prediction: The Swiss are ready to roll
- don't write them off.
