When you "back" a selection (be it an individual, a team, horse, dog or other), you are betting that it will win. This is just like betting with conventional bookies. When you "lay" it, you are betting against it winning. For example, if you're betting in a market on which team is going to win the Premiership and you lay Man Utd, you offer odds to other punters who wish to back Man Utd. If Man Utd don't win, then you pick up the backer's stake. If Man Utd wins, then you pay out. This is what bookmakers traditionally do

"....I don't know how they decide, but I've been wondering if they take it in turns to have first choice. The other driver would then have to choose different laps to pit on, with different fuel loads. Didn't Hakkinen/Coulthard have some arrangement like this, if I remember?
This weekend they won't need to worry so much about the safety car coming out, compared with Monaco and Canada. So they probably won't be forced to have very different strategies. That's assuming it's dry, and the forecast is good at the moment.
The victory however was marginalised a bit by the fact that the lead changed place 3 times in as many laps. One more lap and Rossi might have won, one less and Rossi would have won. Hamilton, by contrast, won the race. And the drama is about the season long battle between (currently) four drivers. I do accept though that overtaking is to hard.
So I reckon Hamilton will have more or less the same opportunity to win as his team mate. But will he go all out for the win? Could there be situations where he drives conservatively with the championship in mind.. love the onboard shots at Monaco - one of the highlights of the season for me. T
hey must do something to improve overtaking but IMO it is way too easy on the motorbikes. I find it a bit worthless when they can change places three times a lap. The ultimate for me is a hard fought battle between two drivers really fighting for the place with overtaking vs keeping the place skills where the challenging driver either gets by and secures the place or finishes behind. Unfortunately in f1 at the moment that is not happening......
