"....Sergeant
Cecil 2pts
eachway 5/1 (win
steak refunded
if he finishes
2nd to yeats
ppower )
Holds most of
these on the
Yorkshire Cup
form and trained
specifically for
this race.
Proven over the
distance ie
Cadaran win and
expected to
reverse the
defeat to
Montare later on
in the Royal Oak
when Ryan Moore
was a bit lapse
and got going
too late!
I reckon he was
just a bit naive
when the stepped
him up to
pattern class
last season
hence his
defeats to
LandnStars and
to Yeats twice.
but the penny
dropped and he
seems alot more
ruthless and
professional
now...sort of
like manduro.
Probably the
best reason to
back him...Jimmy
Fortune. He's
got a record of
21231 on the
horse and he's
riding ever so
well at the
meeting. I'm
sure when he
produces in the
Sarge in the
straight we'll
see a
powerpacked
finish from both
rider and horse.
main dangers -
Yeats obviously
and Cherry Mix
giving the
stable's record
in the race and
at stepping
horses up in
trip. Ascalon in
the Hampton
Court.
This fella
flashed home
fastest of all
in Diamond
Tycoon's 'super
maiden', and
then lost his
cherry in an
average maiden
(still over a
mile) at HQ.
Both times it
seemed that
things were
going half a
stride to
quickly for him,
and he only
really found his
stride inside
the final
furlong.
Connections
reckon he'll be
a
mile-and-a-half
horse, as
suggested by his
breeding (by
Galileo out of a
Trempolino
mare).
Interestingly,
Tabor & Magnier
appear to have
taken a share in
the horse since
his victory
(would they
really be
interested in an
87-rated
handicapper?).
Also (as
mentioned
elsewhere), MJK
takes the ride
in preference to
2 Ballydoyle
inmates.
It is strange
that connections
have eschewed
the opportunity
to exploit the
Handicapper's
leniency, in
favour of
throwing him in
at this level,
but perhaps
that's a comment
on their regard
for him.
Rather like
Peeping Fawn in
The Oaks, I'm
anticipating
massive
improvement for
the step up in
trip.I'm not
really a fan of
each-way betting
if I can help it
but for a long
time the Gold
Cup has had that
feel about it,
frankly a case
can made for
more or less
every horse to
get a place - so
with that in
mind - had a
dart at a couple
of rags: Rising
Cross is a
particular
favourite who
has improved
every time she's
been stepped up
in distance and
while she is
held by the
likes of Montare
and Sergeant
Cecil she'll be
sticking on when
others have
cried enough,
her performance
in the
Coronation Cup
also showed that
she's as good as
ever, her
current price
borders on
insulting.
The same
could be said
regarding The
Last Drop for
whom absolutely
nothing has gone
right this
season;
desperately
unlucky at
Nottingham and
then given a
very average
ride by R Hills
over the course
behind Tungsten
Strike and
Baddam, even
that form taken
literally
entitles him to
be a bit shorter
and would be
surprised (if
provided all is
ok after York)
if he could not
get closer to
those two and
maybe overturn
the form, which
would put him
bang there in
hunt - his St.
Leger 2nd shows
he has a touch
of class and
interestingly
Hills has been
dispensed with
and McEvoy
booked, who
might be able to
creep him into
contention to
nick a place.
While I wont be
laying Yates I
really do not
fancy him one
iota at 4/6 or
so, if its
turned into a
war of attrition
I just have my
doubts about his
resoultion
(would love to
see little
Rising Cross get
him at it!) -
having said that
the beast will
probably go and
lap some of
these now......
