"..What made me think of this was "celebrating victory" jumping the last in this year's William Hill Trophy, as I had backed both Juveigneur and Distant Thunder at 14-1 prior to the race, only to be done by Joe's Edge - that hurt, but still doesn't make my top 2 !!
My 2 still give me that sickening feeling to this day, and even watching the video re-runs, I still think they are going to win.
1) Challenger Du Luc, who is the only horse I can ever remember taking a pull going to the last in any 3 mile Chase (let alone the bloody King George) in the 1997 running, before conspiring against his jockey (A P) and himself to finish behind See More Business.
2) Having snapped up 10-1 about Le Coudray to win the 1999 Stayers', I was delighted to see the horse get the better of Lady Rebecca after the last and win.... only for Richard Johnson to score his first Festival success from the clouds on Anzum at 40-1 - I can't say any more other than "How did the horse get up ?"
One in my favour, just to balance things up, however, was Fighting Words beating The Committee by a short head in the 1994 Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir race. The Runner-up was cantering, nearly brought down twice, and still on the bridle turning in but somehow the Josh Gifford horse found enough to prevail. Fonthill Road getting pipped by a nostril thanks to Fallon and Gift Horse at Glorious Goodwood.
FR was a decent AP voucher for me with all the rain leading up to the race and I thought he had it in the bag. What made it worse was being there and turnng to my mates to celebrate before releasing by the look on their faces that all was not well. henry cecils best horse to never prove himself, sabrehill, used to read about him on a weekly basis on the gallops reports in the RP burning up the gallops, supposedly nothing could live with him only for him to produce a poor gallop a week before his debut which led to him being allowed to start at a very generous 15/2 which he proceeded to romp home.
He followed up with an even more impressive victory at newbury which was taken away from him in the stewards room.then the race that sticks in my mind the 1993 juddmonte, travelled supremely well only to be taken to the front to soon and a mixture of greenness and pulling too hard early on led to him tying up in closing stages and being caught by ezzoud...
